Floor Prep, with Sidetrack

I was planning on cleaning out all the junk and trash that's accumulated on the floor these last few weeks in order to get ready to install the underlayment. While doing this, I got to thinking about that closet wall, and whether the way it is now will have to be changed, because if so, I need to do it before putting up the underlayment. As it turns out, it didn't, but I needed to alter it a bit anyway to accomodate the shelves and cabinets I'm thinking of putting in.

Here's the way it used to look. It was framed for a closet door. There was also a little vertical support between the ceiling and the top of the doorframe, but I'd already knocked it out before taking this picture.

Bye-bye doorframe. I also added some 2x4s to the top of the vertical doorframe members so that it's the same width all the way to the ceiling. I'm toying with the idea of putting in a cabinet at the top here.

While I'm screwing with the closet wall, let's do something about this light switch. It's not really in an obvious position. It should be just around the corner, so you see it when you open the door.

This is a good spot, so slice out a hole for the box. The studs I cut are not structural. The one with the Xs is the one holding things up. I do wonder how many code violations I'm committing on this project. Note that I said "how many", not "if".

Here's the switch in its new position.

Sidetrack complete, floor is clean, now On to the Underlayment.
