New Fan

I was informed by the Architectural Review Board that the existing fan was needing replacement. It was very very noisy, such that the kids didn't like to be in there when it was running. It also didn't seem to work very well. If we were going to do that, now was the time, before I put up the walls in the closet, so that I could run any wiring that needed to be run. We found a nice quiet fan at Home Despot, but she was wanting one with a light that I could hook up to a motion sensor switch so that the light and fan would automatically come on when anyone was in the room, to ensure that the humidity would get vented. I poked around, and found this. Nice and quiet, with a humidity sensor to turn it on and off automatically. So I ordered it, and it came in a couple days later, just in time for the weekend.

I went into the attic to see just where that fan vented, because I didn't see a vent on the side of the house, and I didn't remember there being one in that area of the roof.

And guess what? The damn thing just vented into the attic. There was about two feet of aluminum duct, just laying there on top of the insulation. There was no covered-up hole in the roof, so it wasn't the roofer being lazy. Sigh. Yet another WTF moment courtesy of the builder. Off to Lowes, buy some duct and an external vent.

Here's the hole where the old fan was, enlarged to fit the new fan.

I decided to be lazy, and stuck the camera up and took a few pictures in the general direction of the exterior wall, so I could see the best place to put that vent. This looked like a good spot. I eyeballed where it was in relation to the corner of the attic vent, and went outside to scope it out.

Here's the outside. Fortunately, I have a bigass ladder. Up I go with the vent and a pencil, and start tracing where the hole should go. Then I get this feeling like someone is watching me...

"Hey you. On the ladder. You're putting marks on our wall. We don't like that. Just back away and we let you live. Don't come back. Don't even think about it."

"Say hello to my little friend."

Hole cut. Notice my jigsaw, safely hanging by its power cord.

Vent installed. I'll paint it later, when the caulk dries. Now I have to go into the attic and hook things up. I hate going into the attic.
